Books: My Gothic Novel Erosion is One Year Old

A year ago this month my Gothic novel, Erosion, was officially published! I'm still hugely proud of my story about a group of friends finding an ancient burial site on an eroding Kent cliff. Rather than tell the authorities, they decide to do a seance to contact the spirit of the woman they believe is buried there. It's a magical ghost story, but it's also about friendship over a summer by the sea.

Here's the synopsis from my publisher Moon Books' website:

''It all began when we found the bones…'' This is the start of Erosion, a gothic novel set on the English coast, in 1987, the year of the Great Storm. Violent weather is but one of the problems a group of friends face when they discover an ancient grave inside a crumbling cliff and decide to unearth a skull. Supernatural mystery intertwines with the problems of human relationships, of earning money, of following dreams.

If you want a further taster, I earlier blogged with a short extract from the text. You can find it here: http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2024/04/sea-magic-extract-from-erosion-my.html

Endorsements and Reviews

I'm still very grateful to Ben Aaronovitch, author of the Rivers of London series of novels, for writing the endorsement that appears on the cover of Erosion

"An elegiac tale of memory, growth and regret set along the crumbling coast of 1980s Kent."

Other reviews have also been highly positive. Witch and author Ness Bosch wrote:

"Erosion is a great read. Lucya weaves a colourful story with great characters and the bittersweet emotional turmoil of the drama. Yes you need to get the bigger picture at the beginning, once you have it, it flows like water.

"No only is it engaging but Lucya manages to transport us back in time, to younger years, to the intense emotions, the frustrations, the bravery, the fears. That is pretty good already, but on top of that is the magic inside the book, the mystery, I would say beyond Gothic. I see proper Necromancy in these pages. I even loved the name of the ghost."

Arietta the Crafty Witch has reviewed my Gothic novel Erosion on her YouTube Channel. You can find the link here

I put a few of the other comments I've received on an image that you can see below.

Pagan Eye: The New Green Man Sign for Anerley

Anerley, in my part of South East London, has a new sign. It's a Green Man! I heard about it on April 1st and initially thought the picture I'd seen shared was a prank. I had to go and see for myself, of course, and can state that it really does exist. I took the photo above yesterday.

Local historian Alan Pottinger said that the Green Man, as well as being a symbol of the cycle of nature, is a suitable sign because "before 1827,  Anerley was almost entirely oak woodland.”

There's actually a tiny Green Man on the front of the porch of a local church: St John's in Penge. You can see a picture of it in one of my blog posts on searching for strange architectural creatures.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.

Divination: The Deceit Fool from the Fool's Wisdom

For April Fool's Day I've drawn a card for the world from The Fool's Wisdom Oracle, and it is the Deceit Fool. You can see it on the right.

All the cards in the deck show a person in jester's attire, but this one shows them walking blindfolded. The message in the book that comes wth the set is that this is a warning to beware of fraudulent people. There are a lot of deceptive things going on around us right now, so don't be a fool yourself and don't be misled. Trust your intuition and if something doesn't feel right, question it. As the book says:
"Who or what is trying to give you a faulty impression of reality? Who or what is trying to trick you into believing something other than the truth?"
On April 1st we try to spot attempts to make us look like fools. Mostly, these are harmless jokes, but we still don't want to get caught out. At the moment, however, we need to use extra vigilance every day as there are far more dangerous attempts to con us than mere pranks. The book goes on to say:
"Don't ignore red flags... Don't put your head in the sand for fear of what you'll discover. Ask questions, scrutinize, and voice your doubts. Challenge what feels wrong with the picture being presented."
There's nothing wrong with checking facts, asking for verification or voicing your doubts. No one wants to look like a fool on April 1st. Let's all make extra efforts to be wise on other days of the year too.
